Selvedge: what the red line means.

The self-finished edge, the ID line, and why Japanese mills slowed the loom on purpose.

MATERIALS3 MINENDS AT: ANY DENIM RACK

Selvedge is not a brand. It’s a way of weaving denim — and a shorthand for mills that refused to rush.

SHOT: CUFF ROLLED, CLEAN EDGE WITH NO OVERLOCK
01

Self-finished, not cut

Flip the hem. Selvedge denim finishes itself at the loom — no overlocked white thread holding a frayed edge. That clean stripe is the first tell.

SHOT: MACRO ON RED LINE IN THE SELVEDGE
02

The coloured ID line

Mills wove a coloured yarn into the edge so factories could tell rolls apart. Red is the famous one — not holy, just common. The line names the mill culture, not a decade.

SHOT: DENSE INDIGO WEAVE, SIDE LIGHT
03

Why Japan slowed it down

After American shuttle looms were sold off, Japanese mills bought them, ran them slower, and chased denser, irregular cloth. That’s the origin story of raw Japanese denim people hunt for.

SHOT: STIFF DARK PAIR NEXT TO FADED PAIR
04

Raw vs washed

Raw means unwashed indigo — stiff, dark, will mould to you. Washed means someone else started the fade. Neither is fake; know which one you’re buying before you pay for “character.”

THE 30-SECOND VERSION
01Clean edge, no overlock.
02Coloured line = mill ID.
03Japan: slower looms, denser cloth.
04Raw fades; washed already did.
THIS LESSON ENDS AT

Any denim rack

Roll three cuffs. Count how many are overlocked. The one that isn’t is teaching you the word you’ve been hearing wrong.

CONTINUE IN THE CULTURE

You can read the edge. Go find denser cloth.

Japanese denim on SZN2 is selvedge, raw, and house pieces — one of each, measured, no theatre.
