Why Kolkata and Kerala wear football shirts like nowhere else.
Two football cultures older than any broadcast deal, and the kits that came with them.
Every World Cup, Kerala paints its streets for Argentina and Brazil. Kolkata’s derby predates most of Europe’s. The shirts were always going to follow.

The Maidan came first
Kolkata’s club rivalry has packed stadiums for over a century. Football here isn’t imported culture. It’s inherited, and a shirt is how you declare a side.

Kerala chose its own teams
No local giant to follow, so Kerala adopted nations, Argentina and Brazil above all. Every four years the flags go up, and the jerseys stay on all year.

The shirt left the stadium
Worldwide, the football shirt became fashion the moment it stopped needing a match. India’s thrift racks are full of the evidence: club kits from leagues an ocean away.

How to read one
Era shows in the sponsor, the maker, the cut. A stitched crest and a boxy cut usually mean older; a slim cut means the last decade. The shirt dates itself if you look.
- 01Kolkata: inherited, not imported.
- 02Kerala: nations over clubs.
- 03The shirt outgrew the match.
- 04Sponsor + cut = the era.
Questions people ask.
Why does Kerala support Argentina and Brazil?
Kerala's football love grew with World Cup broadcasts and stars from Pelé to Maradona to Messi. Fans adopted national teams, and every four years the flags, cut-outs and jerseys go up across the state.
How can I tell how old a football shirt is?
Check the kit maker and the shirt sponsor against the club's history, look at the cut (boxy usually means older, slim means the last decade), and read the inside tags, which often carry a product code you can search.
What should I check before buying a vintage jersey?
The crest, sponsor print and numbering, which crack and peel with washing; the collar and cuffs for stretch; and whether the sponsor and maker match the season the shirt claims to be from.
